Often Dianna's paintings and pastel work originate as a spontaneous emotional release, however she have also been inspired by her own journals and has allowed herself to use the emotional images as a foundation from which to evolve creatively. In the beginning of her career, she was inspired to release her emotions creatively as a way of exploring her inner conversations with herself. Later, when she was diagnosed with cancer for the second time, this skill developed and provided her with a forum for facing her fears, hopes, and own mortality. As she creates today, her work continues to reflect her emotional side, however her creative expression depicts a wider range of feeling. Her career as an artist began with designing and creating jewelry made out of scrap metals, over ten years ago. Painting and drawing shortly followed and was solely figurative. Raw emotion was the starting point, which she explored through the manipulation of color often requiring use of her hands; she literally put myself into her work. Her later work intertwines her earlier style, while communicating emotion through simplified lines and varying images. As viewers experience her work today, crosses, flowers, and figures primarily guide them through her inner life. Each painting and drawing reflects a moment of self-reflection, an instance of truth within herself. Being self-taught, Dianna believes that she allows herself to be playful with her use of color. Frequently, she listens to her intuition as she manipulates color, sometimes using opposites as a way of challenging the viewer to look at color in a new way. |
