Scott Affleck is a genuine renaissance man in the dark age of
postmodernism. His interests in music, psychology and philosophy have
deeply influenced his work. Many of Affleck's oil paintings take from two to
three years to complete. He collects figure studies for paintings as a
composer collects melodies for a symphony and often spends months
working out the composition of a painting in drawing. Once the drawing
of the figures is complete, he looks for a landscape to accompany the
grace of the figures.
"In painting I set out to restore the ethical optimisism that existed from the
renaissance to the enlightenment. Art fell into material pessimism without
ethics as the foundation of culture. The work has been inspired by masters
that reflect a reverence for life, from Botticelli to Puvis de Chavannes."
Affleck lives in New Jersey and is an active member of the Philadelphia
Sketch Club. He regularly writes for the club's journal the, "Sketch Papers."
He is available for portrait commissions.
